Q:Do I have to purchase extra extensions for a 59 inch opening?

No. Our opening is 48″ and we didn’t have to use the extra piece which would add another 13″ …it should work for you. We are very happy with this gate …gate opens/shuts with ease and with 2 strong sled dogs (Samoyed and a Husky) they can’t even budge it at all. Plus it looks good and coordinates with our home.
